Fair Trade
Fair Trade – a trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency and respect – aims for greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by seeking to secure the rights of marginalised producers and workers and offering them better trading conditions.
Thus, Fair Trade organisations have a clear commitment to fair trade as a core principle of their mission. Backed by consumers, they actively engage in supporting producers, raising awareness and campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade.
However, Fair Trade is about more than just trading: it also proves that greater justice in world trade is possible and illustrates how businesses can put people first and still be successful.
The WFTO prescribes 10 principles that Fair Trade organisations must adhere to in carrying out their business. These include:
- reducing poverty;
- transparency and accountability;
- fair trading practices;
- payment of a fair price;
- no child/forced labour;
- a commitment to non-discrimination;
- gender equity and freedom of association;
- good working conditions;
- capacity building;
- honesty in advertising and marketing techniques, and
- respect for the environment.
Every Fair Trade purchase contributes to positive change.
